Women, children among 80 Afghans dead in Italy boat tragedy: MoFA

KABUL (AIP): Afghan foreign ministry confirmed Tuesday (Feb. 28) that around 80 Afghans including women and children were among the people who died after their boat broke apart in sea off southern Italy two days ago. 
The foreign ministry said in a statement that around 80 Afghan refugees including women were traveling to Italy from Turkiye off sea martyred when the wooden boat they were onboard broke apart in the stormy sea, the foreign ministry said in a statement. 
Extending condolences to the families of the deceased, the foreign ministry urged the countrymen to avoid traveling to foreign countries through illegal ways.
The foreign ministry demanded of humanitarian organization, especially Red Cross to recover bodies of the Afghans who died in the incident in Italy.
An overloaded wooden boat carrying immigrants from different countries broke apart after hitting a rock in stormy sea in southern Italy two days ago in which nearly 60 people had been dead and 80 rescued initially.
Afghans traveling to Europe through illegal ways has recently increased. They either face such incidents are detained or killed by the security force of their desired countries, kidnapped for ransom and tortured.
Mostly Afghans leave their country for Europe and other countries due to joblessness; search for better future and in some cases former government employees who fear action against them by the Taliban government. Ends
